Dr. Domanski completed his Doctoral Dissertation, at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), on the modeling of vapor compression heat pumps with capillary tubes. He has remained with NIST and has expanded the heat pump model, HPSIM, to include zeotropic mixtures and evaluate mixture potentials as compared to single-component refrigerants. For this rather difficult and comprehensive task, Dr. Domanski received a "Special Accomplishment Award" from the National Bureau of Standards. Prior to the modeling assignment, he was responsible for heat pump testing in the environmental chambers, which has given him insight into the physical behavior of the heat pump to support the modeling work.

The development of air conditioner and heat pump rating procedures was one of several assignments of Dr. Domanski. The rating procedure for variable-speed equipment and for mix-matched air conditioners was developed under his direction. This study included laboratory investigation and modeling of the effect of the air maldistribution on the performance of an evaporator, as well as laboratory study on short tube restrictors.  Dr. Domanski is a co-holder of two patents on expansion devices.

Dr. Domanski was substantially involved in research related to alternative refrigerants.  He is the principal author of CYCLE-11CYCLE_D, and EVAP-COND simulation models. Currently, he is working on further development of simulation tools to facilitate optimization of air-conditioning equipment, and on implementation of MEMS in HVAC&R equipment for efficiency and reliability improvements.

Dr. Domanski is a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Inc. (ASHRAE) and International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR). In 1997, he organized and chaired the ASHRAE/NIST Refrigerants Conference entitled "Refrigerants for the 21st Century."  He is a past member of the ASHRAE Standards Committee and a chair of its Intersociety Liaison Subcommittee, and a past member of ASHRAE Research Administration Committee and a chair of its Research Activites Subcommittee. Currently, Dr. Domanski is the President of IIR Commission B1, and a member of the International Advisory Board for the International Journal of Refrigeration.

Dr. Domanski received a Bronze Medal Award from the U.S. Department of Commerce in 1992, NIST's William P. Slichter Award in 1995, the Award of Excellence for a Technical Paper at the 2002 International Appliance Technical Conference, the IIR Science and Technology Medal in 2003, and a Silver Medal Award from the U.S. Department of Commerce in 2005.  He is an ASHRAE Fellow and recipient of the 2007 ASHRAE Distinguished Service Award.

Please feel free to contact Dr. Piotr Domanski with any technical inquiries.
