  Photograph of Darren Lowe   Darren has been with the NIST Building and Fire Research Laboratory since January 1989. During this time, Mr. Lowe’s work has been dedicated to computer systems support, BFRL internal/external web site development and maintenance, BFRL network administration and security, data acquisition, fire measurement instrumentation, and the establishment of fire test methods.

Darren's responsibilities include design, maintenance, and content development of BFRL's external and internal web sites. In addition to serving as BFRL IT Security Officer, Darren also provides network administration and computer support for BFRL staff. Darren is a representative for BFRL on the NIST Information Technology Strategic Planning Team (ITSPT), IT Security working group, NIST Information Coordinators, and Chairman of the NIST Web Designers Group.

Many of Darren's recent efforts have focused on IT Security within BFRL. In 2001, Darren received the "Making a Measurable Difference at NIST" award for his work with the Small Business Innovation Research Program at NIST. This effort included the development of a web-based application designed to improve communications and knowledge management between SBIR and their customers.

In his career with BFRL, Darren has been involved with projects such as: ASTM Surface Flammability test methods, large-scale smoke movement and control experiments, mass fire studies in Ontario, Canada, HAZARD I fire model validation studies, Water Mist Fire Suppression, USAF Halon Replacement, and large-scale aircraft hangar fire studies sponsored by the U.S Navy. His tasks in these projects included designing and installing instrumentation packages, formulating test protocols, and acquisition and manipulation of test data.
