  Photograph of Alan Lytle   Mr. Lytle joined the Construction Metrology and Automation Group in 2001 as a Robotics Engineer. His current work includes research toward automated construction, on-site component tracking, and construction object recognition using 3D Imaging systems. He is the current chair of the ASTM committee on 3D Imaging systems (E57), which is working with industry, academia, and government research agencies to develop standards for 3D Imaging systems.

Prior to joining NIST, Mr. Lytle was the Chief Engineer for a nuclear fast-attack submarine, and then worked in the private sector as an engineering director for a company that produced laser-based positioning and tracking instruments. He is a Commander in the U.S. Navy and is currently the Commanding Officer of a Strike Group Operations Detachment based out of Wilmington, DE.

Mr. Lytle received his MS in Environmental Engineering from Virginia Tech in 1994, where he studied environmental remediation and automation systems. His research included the design and construction of a mobile robotic platform for remote sensing and mapping of hazardous waste sites.
