Mr. Winpigler joined the Inorganic Materials Group in 1987, prior to being a Physical Science Aid. Presently, his main topics of research are capillary absorption tests, sulfate attack, and alkali-silica reaction, using a novel device developed at NIST to measure stresses. Recently, he became involved in an extensive series of tests on concrete, and cement paste rheology. He is also in charge of preparing samples for the Inorganic Materials Group’s scanning electron microscope (SEM). After attending classes on computer technology, Mr. Winpigler has maintained all data from the measurements performed. He has also attended specialized seminars on concrete technology for laboratory technicians, sponsored by NIST and the American Concrete Institute (ACI). Mr. Winpigler is in charge of setting up and performing maintenance of equipment for the laboratory, such as saws, polishing devices, and centrifuges. Additionally, he is a Property Manager, and is in charge of precious metals. Mr. Winpigler maintains the chemical inventory list for the Division. He has also participated in other projects preparing reference mortar samples for the Organic Building Materials Group, testing pavers from the U.S. Capitol Building, evaluating self-leveling compounds, and Testing glass fiber reinforced concrete. Before joining the Inorganic Materials Group, Mr. Winpigler participated in a project for the Joint Industry-Government Research on Tape-Bonded Seams of EPDM Roofing for the Organic Materials Group (currently the Polymeric Materials Group). Prior to this, Mr. Winpigler worked for the Office of Standard Reference Materials from 1976-1981. |
